The
name of this gracious, still intact village comes from the Latin silex
which was the stone used in building the Roman Roads.
The village was built on top of an hill, a strategic position along the
trail that linked into the Forum Novum. Still two old Roman stones are
visible on the side of a house in the main street, inside the walls. The
medieval village dates the X century. It was the Feud of the noble
Orsini family from 1368 to 1596. Still visible in the charming, inside
the walls, piazza, the stone square tower of their Palazzo.
All around the hill, olive groves and small vineyards The Sabina, indeed,
is one of the few Italian regions that is actually designated as DOC and
DOP for olive oil production. Limited to the season - generally late
October through mid December - local olive growers will be pleased to
arrange for you, free of charge, a visit to the mill where virgin oil is
squeezed from the olives ripe blacken shells. While at the mill, you
will taste “Bruschetta”, grilled bread dressed with extra virgin olive
oil and garlic. Visit the historical center, up to the village,
strolling inside the walls, in its medieval narrow streets, talking to
the old people that gather everyday on the same bench, in the sun. Taste
the local quiet life and enjoy the time stopping.
